Letter to the Editor: Dan Perry -
Next year in April. we will be remembering and memorializing the 110th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the Titanic, the large and luxurious vessel which set forth on its maiden voyage in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. It had a double bottom hull and was divided into 16 watertight compartments which the designer claimed to be unsinkable. In fact, some sources say they were even bragging about its unique seaworthiness, saying even God couldn’t sink it!
Shortly before midnight on April 14, 1912, the great ship was steaming through the foggy North Atlantic when it collided with a gigantic iceberg which ripped through the ship’s right side creating a 300-foot gash and rupturing five of its water tight compartments. The Titanic sank into the icy depths, killing more than 1500 people on board.
That same night another ship, the Californian was less than 20 miles away from the Titanic. It could have come to the rescue of the sinking liner if only someone had been listening. It is reported that the radio operator had fallen asleep on duty. It was too late to save more than a few lives when help finally reached the disaster. The majesty of the Titanic had led the crew and passengers to feel overly confident. Their faith in the huge ship was unwavering, which proved to be a fatal mistake.
I wonder if there is a lesson for us to be learned from this drama? Can you see any similarities in the haughty thinking of those connected with the Titanic and the pride and selfish, self-centered, Godless attitudes of our beloved nation we call America?
With just a little insight and self-examination, we can see how we have gone adrift and are headed for a potentially fatal collision. In one sense we have already run into some “icebergs” that have damaged us to the point of causing not just a few leaks, but almost more than we can handle. If our eyes are opened to the truth, I submit we are in grave danger if we stay on the same course we are on. Let’s don’t fall asleep! Fortunately for us some patriotic stalwarts are watching, praying, and listening. Hopefully we have enough concerned friends who are alert to the danger.
As I see it, our only hope is revival and a return to the Godly values and morals of our founding fathers. Are you willing to do your part in taking on the responsibility to defend those fading values through prayer and revival? Prayer and renewal in Godly principles should be the focus of our attention, and the ballot box in 2022 and 2024 is our best hope. Let’s don’t let America sink!
