Laney, age 11, and Luke, age 9, asked when they could come and spend a few days with Sandra and me. When I checked my calendar, July 30 through August 5 was an open week – no night meetings or other responsibilities except for the two days I work at the Visitor Center on the US 70 Bypass.
This Saturday, April 15, the CSS Neuse II will host its first “Breakfast on the Boat” for 2023. The Neuse II sits in dry dock at the corner of Herritage and Gordon Streets where it draws thousands of visitors each year.
For the second time this year, the CSS Neuse Foundation is hosting “Breakfast on the Boat.” The event will begin around 7 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the CSS Neuse II, the replica gunboat. As usual, “Breakfast on the Boat” features scrambled eggs, bacon, link sausage, grits, biscuits, and a beverage. All foods except biscuits are prepared on the grounds next to the CSS Neuse II. Tables will afford social distancing.
“Breakfast on the Boat” was scheduled in April, but COVID-19 concerns and “shelter in place” orders forced the foundation to postpone one of the foundation’s most tasty and entertaining events. The board rescheduled “Breakfast on the Boat” for June 13, but forecasts of bad weather made event organizers rethink that date.
The 12th edition of “Wings Over the Neuse” will be here in just a few days – on Friday, Sept. 11. The CSS Neuse Foundation, caretakers of the full-sized replica gunboat, depends on this fund-raiser to secure the lion’s share of the funds needed to operate, maintain, and improve the Neuse II experience.
