The Lenoir County Agricultural Fair is back and bigger than ever.

The 63rd annual fair opened Thursday with a ribbon cutting ceremony and will run for 10 days — the longest duration in the history of the event. This is also the first year the N.C. Association of Agricultural Fairs is involved and President Lloyd Moody said it will provide great dividends to those who come out to enjoy the festivities.

“I’ve seen this fair since 1971 and this is the best one we’ve had by far,” Moody said. “This is the first time we’ve had all of the rides up ready for the opening, and there’s a lot of respect across the state for this fair. Numerous representatives across the state recognize this fair as the best one around.”

Lenoir County Cooperative Extension Director Tammy Kelly shared similar sentiments.

“The fairgrounds have never looked better,” Kelly said. “Everybody’s saying it—even people who have been here 50 and 60 years — the weather’s perfect (and) we have lots of opportunities for people to learn new things, have fun and eat.”

Kinston Mayor Don Hardy said he hopes the masses come out to enjoy the fair.

“It’s much needed and appreciated in a time (after Hurricane) Florence and Michael came into the area,” Hardy said. “Agriculture is a vital point for Lenoir County as a whole, and I want everyone to come out, have fun and support the community.”

The gates open at 5 p.m. on weekdays and noon during the weekends. All children 4 and under are free throughout the week, with adults and students admitted for $6 each day except Saturday, where the cost is $7. Unlimited ride wristbands will sell each day for $25.

Senior citizens will be permitted free on Oct. 24 and Oct. 25 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. and those in grade school get $2 off admission on the same days and times.
