Spirit Night is a fundraiser used for schools, churches and other nonprofit organizations to raise money. Chick-fil-A of Kinston Operator John McPhaul said a group will go to the store’s website to set up a date at least two weeks in advance and spread the word to the community. Chick-fil-A will then operate the event and 15 percent of all proceeds go to the fundraising organization.

Spirit Nights are done between 5 and 8 p.m. from Monday through Thursday. In order for an organization to get credit, the customer must say its name while ordering on the night of the event.

“The idea is that the group goes out and tries to solicit as much support for the given night,” McPhaul said. “It’s good for the organization because they have a good opportunity to raise funds and then there’s the social atmosphere. People can come together, have dinner and just enjoy each other’s company.”

Spirit Night is another example of Chick-fil-A looking to be more involved in the community. Founder S. Truett Cathy said “we do not just do business, we become a vital part of the communities in which we exist.”

North Lenoir athletic director Jackson Massey said Spirit Nights have been beneficial at the school over the years.

“It’s been a great fundraiser for us and we’ve done just about every program and club in our school,” Massey said. “The No. 1 thing is it brings the community together, even for a short period of time. People can come in to support North Lenoir and it’s fun to see parents, students, administrators and former players come out. It’s a great outpouring of support and everyone enjoys themselves.”

Moss Hill Elementary third grade teacher Rachel Braswell loves everything about Spirit Nights.

“Spirit Nights for us are always awesome! We usually do our Spirit Nights by grade-level instead of the whole school. This way each grade level profits for just their students. The Cow sometimes makes an appearance at school and waves as the kids dismiss. The students get excited and that must make the parents excited because it is a packed dining room every time. Kids play, parents socialize, cash registers hum and everyone enjoys dining on chicken while making money for the school. Always a good time!”

The next Spirit Night will be held Thursday, Oct. 25 to support the Lenoir Community College volleyball team.
