Greene County deputy wounded following car chase

A high speed chase in Greene County ended with a Sheriff’s Office deputy being shot Tuesday night.

Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith said the situation began around 8:30 p.m. with a call from the Stantonsburg Police Department informing him of a suspect headed toward his jurisdiction.

“[The car] was going about 100 mph, and weaving in and out of traffic, meeting people head on and forcing them off the road,” Smith said.

The sheriff said deputies began to pursue the vehicle, and one deputy ended the chase by getting in front of the suspect’s vehicle. Deputies surrounded the vehicle, and the driver exited his vehicle and presented a weapon in a threatening way, so the deputies opened fire.

The suspect was hit, along with one deputy, who Smith said was likely caught in the crossfire.

“The deputy was only grazed in the arm, and he has been treated and released,” Smith said. “ He’s fine,” Smith said.

The suspect is Devin Bigler, 40, who was first reported missing nearly a week earlier. He was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, financial card theft and obtaining property by false pretenses.
