South Central picks up a pair of wins over Greene Central

By Jake Keator / The Daily Reflector

South Central boys basketball took down Greene Central once again Wednesday night, earning an 80-41 victory.

It was the second meeting of the young season for these two teams, with the Falcons also taking the win on the road, 92-61 on Nov. 27.

The Falcons were once again led by Day’ron Sharpe, who led all scorers with 18 points. Jahzeer Baker had 14, while Shykeim Phillips played the role of the passer, finishing with 10 points. The Rams leaned heavily on Imajae Dodd for production, he had 13 points in the match-up.

We stuck to the script tonight, do what we do,” Falcons head coach Chris Cherry said. “Last time we had a lot of first game jitters, first game mistakes. We played a lot more fluid game offensively tonight.”

Fluid was the perfect word to describe the Falcons offense, as they quickly jumped to an 11-2 lead that set the tone for the rest of the game. The Rams struggled to get any of their shots to fall.

Dodd made his presence known early rocking the rim to try and jump start a run, making the score 11-5. Sharpe responded quickly, gathering up a missed shot and slamming it down to energize a rowdy SC student section. Shortly thereafter Baker kept the energy going, nailing  back to-back triples to push the score to 27-13.

On defense, the Falcons played a strong half-court set, forcing GC guard B.J. Corbitt into several traps in the corner. GC head coach Blue Edwards continued to try and help his struggling squad navigate through the SC defense.

Dodd and Sharpe did not meet in the post as much as their first meeting in Snow Hill, as Dodd worked to try and stretch the floor to get his teams shooters hot. He did however nail a nice turnaround jumper with Sharpe’s hand in his face to the delight of the onlooking Rams faithful.

On the other side, Sharpe worked hard on the defensive glass, picking up the lose balls left by missed GC shots. The Falcons then slowed the pace to kill clock as they moved methodically up the floor.

In the second half shots started to fall for the Rams, as they began to push the floor in transition more leading to easier and more plentiful shots.

The Falcons (4-0) will travel to First Flight High School for their next match-up, taking on Woodside High School (VA.)

Cherry is ready to get into preparing for an opponent he and his squad are unfamiliar with.

“We’ll take a look at them,” Cherry said. “More than anything here at South Central we take pride in being us. We’ll identify the things we don’t do so well and work on improving those areas in this game.”

The Rams (2-3) will host another difficult opponent in Farmville Central Friday night in Snow Hill.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

SOUTH CENTRAL 63, GREENE CENTRAL 17

Like the boys team, SC’s girls team defeated their Greene Central counterpart, 63-17.

The Falcons took control from the first tip, jumping out to a 23-0 lead. The Rams didn’t get on the board till the second quarter, when Leaudrea Mason (three points) made a layup.

The Falcons were led by Ninevah Reddick, who had 13 points. Kayla Friend (nine points), Anna Mewborn (eight points) and Cyanni Whitfield (eight points) also had solid contributions.

SC saw many of its points come off of GC turnovers. The Rams struggled to get any good looks, with the majority of their points coming in the fourth quarter. They also struggled from the free throw line.

The Falcons will host Bertie Dec. 12, while the Rams will take on Farmville Central in Snow Hill on Friday.
