Woodies complete series sweep in Wilmington

Story by Dominic Cotroneo / Down East Wood Ducks

WILMINGTON, Del. — The Down East Wood Ducks resumed a suspended game from Tuesday night and turned the modified doubleheader on Wednesday into a series sweep of the Wilmington Blue Rocks. They won in two very different fashions: claiming a shutout in the suspended contest, and grinding out a one-run win in the nightcap.

RESUMED GAME: DEWD 5, BLUE ROCKS 0

Rains forced the game to be suspended Tuesday night with a 4-0 Woodies’ lead. They added one more in the resumption with a Yanio Perez RBI single -- his second of the game -- in the fifth inning.

Chuck Leblanc also had a two-hit game with a double and a triple along with two runs scored. The offense also received contributions from Leody Taveras (2 RBI-single) and Eric Jenkins (RBI-double) before the rains forced the game to a halt.

On the pitching side, the shutout was impressive in the full bullpen effort. Emerson Martinez started the game Tuesday but did not return Wednesday after three innings with three strikeouts. Left-hander Christian Torres took the ball in the bottom of the fourth and tossed two scoreless innings.

The Wood Ducks scored their last run in the fifth inning and let the pitching shine. Jacob Lemoine turned in a season-high three innings and earned the win. He only allowed one hit and recorded two strikeouts. Kaleb Fontenot tossed a scoreless ninth and the Woodies locked up their seventh shutout of the season.

GAME THREE: DEWD 3, Blue Rocks 2

The Wood Ducks (21-38 second half, 56-73 overall) completed the sweep despite getting out-hit by the Blue Rocks (60-68, 29-29) and won 3-2. Alex Kowalczyk delivered the biggest swing of the night in the fourth inning. With the game tied at one, he hit an opposite-field, two-run, two-out and two-strike homer to right field to give the Woodies a 3-1 lead.

It was a lead the Ducks never relinquished as Rollie Lacy earns his first win as a member of the Rangers organization. He tossed five innings with six strikeouts and only allowed two earned runs on the night.

However, the night could have gone in a very different direction in the first inning.

The Blue Rocks ran themselves into two outs in the first between third base and home plate. However, they still plated a run on a two-out RBI single by Travis Jones.

Perez delivered another RBI in the finale with a sacrifice fly to right-center to bring in Anderson Tejeda (who reached base in all four plate appearances). Later in the fourth, Leblanc managed a single up the middle to set the stage for Kowalczyk’s homer to give the DEWDs the lead.

Lacy exited with a 3-2 lead in the sixth for Blake Bass, who retired six of seven batters faced - including a 1-2-3 seventh against the top of the Wilmington order to claim his first save of 2018.

The Woodies earned their first sweep of the second half and first three-game winning streak since June. They will have Thursday off before returning home for the penultimate weekend of baseball at Grainger Stadium in the 2018 season. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will be in town Friday-Sunday to kick off the homestretch of the season.
