A community service opportunity is available for students and adults ages 17 and older that offers work experience and training through a hosted AmeriCorps site at the Caswell Developmental Center.
AmeriCorps programs provide a spirited opportunity for service to our country that is similar to the Peace Corps. The programs serve communities to meet our country’s critical needs in such areas as disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship and healthy futures.
The program at the Caswell Center is offered through N.C. AbilityCorps and applications are being accepted for the 2018-19 program. Members assist intellectually and developmentally disabled residents in their homes, classrooms, worksites and in leisure activities. Members work alongside staff to provide healthy, safe, stimulating and enjoyable environments for Caswell Center individuals.
The Caswell Center-based program is among 15 AmeriCorps projects across the state sponsored by the N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service in the office of Gov. Roy Cooper. Since 1994, more than 4,000 AmeriCorps members have given at least one year in service to N.C. AmeriCorps members, in service to their state and their country, pledge to act and to get things done.
The N.C. AbilityCorps program provides valuable experiences and more than 11 months of on-site training and work experience. A monthly living allowance is provided, and after successfully completing 900 hours or approximately 22-25 hours per week, members will receive a $2,960 Segal education award.
AmeriCorps N.C. AbilityCorps members must be at least 17 years old and either enrolled in high school or hold a high school diploma. Program members have a commitment to serve others, to learn new skills and embrace new experiences.
Members make a difference in the lives of the Caswell Center residents while expanding and enriching their own horizons such as preparing for careers in healthcare, gaining valuable work and service experience, and adding a competitive component to their education credentials.
