Smith Hardy Photo Album: Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, Surf City, Topsail, New Bern and Pollocksville
On Tuesday, September 18th I had the privilege to hop in a plane at Tradewind Aviation in New Bern, NC to get aerial photos of some of the hardest hit areas from Florence. I had hoped on getting over to Fayetteville and Wilmington area but there were restrictions on flying in that area due to the president arriving into town and all the water rescues. The first images you see are of Pollocksville overhead.
On Tuesday the water was still very high in the Jones County area. You see a few photos of boats going through downtown and water almost to the rooftops. Such a sad situation for this area.
After we passed through Pollocksville we headed towards the coast and got a few aerial photos of the pier in Atlantic Beach and cottages that sit right on the beach including Emerald Isle. After passing through there we made it to Surf City and Topsail Island. We saw a lot of beach erosion and some of the homes had significant wind damage. There are a few pictures of boats in New Bern that had been damaged due to storm surge on the Trent River.
The last two were on the ground in Pollocksville, including a VHS tape documentary of Hurricane Floyd in 1999.
