Mcgoo’s Christmas 4 Veterans
The holiday season is upon us and a local non-profit organization is here to give thanks to our local veterans. Mcgoo’s Christmas 4 Veterans, started by Representative Keith Kidwell, will be at the Kinston Veterans Home on today at 1:00 pm.
About 5 years ago, Kidwell visited the veterans' home with a group of colleagues. Kidwell was so moved by it, he told his wife about the experience, and also told her he would do it again in two weeks with his business. He contacted the veterans' home and found out what their needs were. Through the outreach of friends, family, and social media, Kidwell delivered about $800 in gifts. By the second year, he reached $1200 and by the third year, he had raised over $2000 for gifts for the veterans.
The one thing that bothered him was that the donations weren't available to be tax-deductible for those who were contributing. It was then that he took his yearly Christmas event and turned into a non-profit. As it was around the same time, his wife’s father passed away, he wanted to name it in honor of her late father who served in Korea. He was known as Mcgoo throughout his military career. As a frequent lottery player, they often quoted the veteran as saying if he won big, he would take care of the veterans first, and family second.
This year, Representative Kidwell is getting help from other legislatures. Representative Chris Humphrey will join him at the Kinston Veterans Home. Other Representatives, including Representative Jerry Carter, took up a donation from his church. Representative Jason Saine has helped with the promotion.
Expanding to Fayetteville for the first time this year, the Mcgoo’s Christmas 4 Veterans organization will deliver gifts to over 260 veterans. While some veterans specifically asked for higher-priced items, most will receive three gifts.
