Construction is underway that will transform the long-vacant RadioShack building on West Vernon Avenue into Kinston’s first Starbucks.

A Starbucks spokesman confirmed work had begun, and said the location will be open by the fall of 2020. The new store will employ approximately twenty-five to thirty people, and will feature a drive-thru, the spokesman said.

Kinston City Manager Tony Sears said the start of construction is an important event for the city.

“Having a Starbucks is kind of like a status symbol,” Sears said.

Additionally, Sears said, Starbucks’ decision to locate in Kinston could lead to more development in the future.

“Starbucks’ market study is so detailed. If they believe they can work in the Kinston market, hopefully other retailers will see the benefit of being in our market,” Sears said.

According to the building plans submitted to the city planner’s office, the Starbucks will feature outdoor patio seating, interior tables and chairs, bar seating, and more comfortable padded chairs.

Kinston City Planner Adam Short said Starbucks submitted their plans in mid-November, and the city reviewed and approved them with no delays.

“They are moving forward, and we are happy to see things moving forward at that site,” Short said.
