Banks Elementary recently created a walk-through history museum for Black History Month.

Students and staff of the school researched people and events that made a great impact on history, presenting it on Feb. 19. Thomas Floyd, a second grader at Banks, did his presentation on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"His most famous speech was the I Have A Dream Speech,” Floyd said. “It was about him having a dream that people should not be judged by the color of their skin."

Another second-grader, Hudson Horton, talked about Sojourner Truth.

"She tried to help with women's rights and she talked to Abraham Lincoln about slavery,” Horton said.

Heather Huggins is a kindergarten teacher at Banks and the organizer of the event. She said it was important for the children to learn about history.

"The museum helped open doors of exposure to black history for our students,” Huggins said. “It’s important for our students to understand the impacts of the past so that we may have a better future for all."
