ICYMI: Fifth annual Stew and Brew event is Saturday

EDITOR’S NOTE: This piece was originally published on 3/1/19

The fifth annual Stew and Brew Festival is right around the corner.

The event takes place at Mother Earth Brewery Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The cost is $10 for the public, which includes unlimited samples of the competitors’ fish stew and a ticket for a free Mother Earth beer or soda. Those who purchase a ticket can vote on which stew deserves to be crowned as the best, and overall stews are judged on quality and showmanship. There is a $50 registration fee for the cooks to participate and the event is open to everyone.

All proceeds go toward the G.I. Joe’s Living History Museum.

“It’s a wonderful event and I’m glad people continue to come support a good cause,” event chair Anna Kinsey said. “Registration forms can be picked up at the G.I. Joe’s Museum (1165-B Hwy 11/55 South) and Reynold’s Seafood donates onions and potatoes for the cooks who need it.”

Eric Cantu, curator of the museum, said the event is a fun event for a wonderful cause.

“It’s beneficial to the social life of the people here in Kinston,” Cantu said. “It’s a great event and an opportunity to get together with friends, enjoying fish stew.”

First place is $150, second place receives $75 and third place gets $25. The showmanship winner receives $100 and the People’s Choice — the John Burton Jr. Award of Excellence — gets $200.
