Farmer's market update — March 2
March 2, 2019
Neuse News
We are still waiting for strawberries and asparagus to ripen. The market will open as soon as these two crops are ripe and ready.
Meanwhile, Rodney, the pork skin man, will be in his booth selling pork skins, pork rinds and fried peanuts on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. If you are on the Keto Diet, these snacks are meant for you. They are also delicious with oysters, crumbled on baked potatoes and salads.
Looking at this beautiful field of strawberry plants assures us that the taste of a local ripe, red, juicy, sweet strawberry cannot be far away. As soon as these berries are ready for our tables, they will be available at our market and it should be mid April. Stay tuned as their progress is updated. Submitted photo
It's really happening — the work has now begun on our dream: the community kitchen to be built inside the Rick Holder Annex. We have to start from almost scratch for the kitchen to be a health department, NCDA-certified spot for caterers, bakers, canners or other food preparers, as well as a teaching and demonstration center. Keep up with our progress in this newsletter. Submitted photo

This is a fascinating class if you have any interest in learning more about honey bees and their place in our lives and in nature. Actually, we might not have any food if it weren't for these little, but busy, creatures. Come out and find out about the hierarchy of the bee hive. You will find out why most females would like to be a queen bee!
