For more than a dozen schools Wednesday, class was in session at Historic Grainger Stadium.

Lenoir Community College sponsored Education Day, as the Down East Wood Ducks took on the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in an 11 a.m. contest. Students from eight local schools — Ayden Middle, Children’s Village Academy, Contentea-Savannah, Frink Middle, Grifton School, Kinston High, Northwest Elementary and Pink Hill Elementary were among the throng of 2,670 fans who witnessed the DEWDs pick up the 7-0 victory and improve to 5-2 on the season.

“The kids really enjoy it,” Pink Hill fourth-grade teacher Selina Gray said. “As soon as they heard about it, they started talking about the things they were going to buy at the concession stand and gift shop. Everyone’s having a good time and they loved to be out of class to see the game.”

Pink Hill fourth-grader Ricky Brown agreed with Gray.

“There are several things I like about (Wednesday),” Brown said. “I like the food, I like the game because I love the Wood Ducks and I like getting out of class.”

Northwest Elementary first-grader Nylah Warren said she enjoys both watching baseball and participating.

“I like playing it at the house,” Warren said. “This isn’t my first time seeing baseball here and I like the team.”

Northwest Elementary first-grade teacher Jessica Perry said Education Day has another positive purpose.

“We have our Field Day next week, so this is a good way for them to learn sportsmanship, seeing the players and how they react,” Perry said.

Overall, LCC student recruiter Mallory Kennedy said it was a great event.

“The kids get the opportunity to come out of the classroom and enjoy what Kinston has to offer,” Kennedy said. “Baseball is back and they get to experience it with their classmates, breaking the regular routine.”
