It’s a tradition unlike any other at Lenoir Community College.

LCC held its annual Spring Joust Wednesday for its students, full of numerous events. The carnival-like setup has gone on for more than 10 years at the school and had animals, games, music, trivia questions and giveaways for the masses.

Shelly Barnes, the athletic director at LCC, said it was a great way to break the monotony of an arduous grind throughout the school year.

“This is almost like a reward for the kids,” Barnes said. “They can have a great time at this event, there’s free food and games for them, and they can win something at every booth.”

LCC freshman Janasia Pizzell said she enjoyed everything the Joust had to offer.

“It’s nice to see different clubs come together for the event and it’s definitely been a fun experience,” Pizzell said.

Matt Raynor, a freshman at LCC, shared similar sentiments and also tried to go for an additional incentive.

“I was trying to get extra credit, riding the bull for a minute, 30 (seconds),” Raynor said.

The event was also a way for the school to showcase what it had to offer. Swindell Isler Jr, instructor and  manager of the LCC Barber School in Snow Hill, said he wanted people to see another dimension of the college.

“It’s an opportunity for us to raise awareness and promote the students we have in the program,” Isler said. “A lot of people think because it’s a barber school the quality isn’t the best, but we promise a great experience.”

Overall, SGA president Jacob Howard said he was excited about the turnout.

“It’s a fun event and a way to have some excitement before finals start,” Howard said. “The clubs set up tables and booths in the morning, and we’re able to put this on for the students where everything’s free. It’s amazing that a school of our size is able to have something this big, and everyone’s having a great time.”
