The emcee of Saturday’s ceremony, George Whitfield, was inducted into the Kinston-Lenoir County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. He was surprised at Saturday’s event by Lenoir County Board of Commissioners member Craig Hill, who announced that — in conjunction with the City of Kinston and the Kinston/Lenoir County Parks and Recreation Department — the main entryway into Historic Grainger Stadium will be renamed ‘Whitfield Way’ in honor of the venerable coach.
