TRENTON — Recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Florence has not been easy for Jones County. But spring is a time of rebirth and renewal and on Saturday, the Jones County community will have a chance to enjoy the beauty of spring at Brock’s Mill in Trenton.

The Friends of Brock’s Mill organization is hosting the second annual Spring Pond Party on Saturday from 12-6 p.m. at the mill, at 212 S. Market St., Trenton.

Event organizer Charlie Jones said the inaugural party last year was meant as a way to give back to the Jones County community that helps support Brock’s Mill through their donations.

“This year, it’s even more poignant, because Jones County has been through so much, and it means a lot to have a day where we can come together and just relax,” he said.

The restored mill is at the center of the party, with the building opening for tours at noon. Jones County Manager Franky Howard said grinding demonstrations will take place throughout the afternoon.

The millpond will be another highlight, Howard said. A pontoon boat will be on hand to give visitors rides around the pond, and the organizers plan to have some kayaks available for those who would prefer to paddle themselves around.

There will be a concession stand available, with proceeds going back to Brock’s Mill. Trenton’s Big Game Brewing will be offering local beers for purchase as well.

Live music from the New Bern band Strung Together will begin at 4 p.m. and continue until 6 p.m.

“Bring a lawn chair and just plan to hang out and relax,” Jones said. Folks can even bring their own canoe or kayak, he said, “and enjoy the pond, sit back and enjoy the music from the water.”

Parking will be available across the street from the mill, and throughout the downtown Trenton area a short walk away. Howard said he hopes the event will be a fun and interactive time for the community.

“It’s our give-back event to the community, and it means more this year after all we’ve been through,” he said.
