UPDATED: Thursday shooting kills one, injures another in Kinston

UPDATED at 7:05 a.m. According to the Kinston Police Department, Dantravelle Shackleford has been arrested by officers of the Kinston Police Department. Shackleford will be placed in the Lenoir County Jail without bond.

The Kinston Police Department announced late Thursday evening that they have obtained a warrant for the arrest of Dantravelle Shackleford, 23, of Kinston in connection with the shooting Thursday afternoon on Orion St. Shackleford is wanted for Murder, Attempted Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The KPD asks anyone with information on the whereabouts of Shackleford to contact the Tips Line at 252-939-4020 or Lenoir County Crime Stoppers at 252-523-4444.

A Thursday afternoon shooting in Kinston has left one man dead and another in the hospital.

According to the Kinston Police Department, officers responded to the 300 block of North Orion Street following multiple calls about the shooting around 3:30 p.m. A police department statement said the preliminary investigation had revealed the two men were in the front yard of 306 N. Orion St. when they were shot.

Jonathan Simmons, 41, lived at the house, and was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for treatment of non-life threatening injuries following the shooting. Rashawn Franklin, 24, who lived on Yogi Street in Kinston, died at the scene from his injuries. The police department said the assailant or assailants fled the area following the shooting.

Juliette Johnson, who has lived on that block of Orion Street for seven years, said she did not hear the shots, but was alerted to the situation when a neighbor came to her door.

“I’m still in shock,” she said. “I hate that it happened, it’s just sad. This used to be a quiet, peaceful neighborhood. I hope they find who did it so I can feel safe in my own house.”

Other neighbors said they didn’t feel comfortable speaking on the record, but they expressed their shock at the shooting, and the fear that came with the perpetrators being at large.

Kinston Mayor Don Hardy said the police department is still collecting intelligence, and hopes to have their focus narrowed to possible suspects in the next day or so.

“We hope we will have some leads from folks in our community, and we are just hoping that it leads to an arrest,” he said Thursday evening.

Hardy said he encourages citizens to be vigilant and to communicate with authorities anything that seems out of place or unusual. He wanted to remind the community that they can remain anonymous when speaking with Crime Stoppers. Hardy also expressed his condolences to the family of Franklin.

“It’s a time for prayer,” he said.

KPD Maj. Tim Dilday said Thursday evening “the investigation is progressing and we hope to have some information that we can share with the family and the public in the near future that would allow Mr. Franklin’s family to begin the healing process. “
