LCPS to graduate 600 seniors in four commencements next week
Nearly 600 seniors who have accumulated some $10 million in college scholarship offers will put a bow on their high school careers with commencement exercises next week. Graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2019 at the county’s three traditional high schools will be held in succession on Saturday, June 1. Students at Lenoir County Learning Academy will graduate earlier, on Wednesday morning. Here are details about the four graduations:
Lenoir County Learning Academy: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the chapel at Kennedy Home. Commencement speaker will be MSgt. Herbert P. Gray, JROTC instructor at Kinston High School. The Rites of Passage ceremony for seventh and eighth graders is also incorporated into the proceedings. Winners of the Community Support Award, Achievement Award and Behavior Award will be announced. Nine seniors will receive diplomas. No tickets are required for admission to commencement.
South Lenoir High School: 9 a.m. Saturday, June 1, in the school gym. Seating is also available in the school auditorium, where a closed-circuit TV link will be provided. Tickets are required for admission to either venue. Commencement speakers will be students chosen by a faculty committee. South Lenoir will graduate 195 seniors. Kinston High School: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1, in the school gym.
Tickets are required of all – including toddlers and infants – for admission. (Doors open at 10:15 a.m.) A live feed of commencement will be shown in the Kinston-Lenoir County Performing Arts Center on campus. Speakers will be graduating seniors Brianna Brooks and Ciara Moye, as well as principal Kellan Bryant. Students with the highest and second highest grade point averages will be recognized, respectively, as the KHS Viking Scholar and KHS Academic Scholar.
Also to be recognized are International Baccalaureate course, certificate and diploma candidates, NC Academic Scholars and honor graduates. Kinston High will graduate 165 seniors. North Lenoir High School: 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1, in the gym at Lenoir Community College.
Tickets are required for admission to the building. Commencement speaker will be Jan Humphrey, North Lenoir Class of 1970 and a retired English teacher at the school. North Lenoir will graduate 210 seniors. The 45 seniors in the Class of 2019 at Lenoir County Early College High School graduate May 8.
