Kinston bowler part of national championship team

By Junious Smith III

Webber International is a national championship team in bowling and a local player helped fuel the charge.

Kinston’s Nash Medico was a member of the Webber International team which defeated Lawrence Tech in April’s 2019 Intercollegiate Team Men’s Championships in Dayton, Ohio. The team, consisting of Medico, Tournament MVP Matt Russo, Evan Baranecky, Adam Glickman, Tom Hankey, Brennan Haugh, Maxx Tamburrino and Adam Zimmerman, defeated Lawrence Tech 3-0 to claim the title.

In all, there were 16 teams competing in Nationals — the top four in each region qualified in March’s sectionals. Medico, a junior with the Warriors, said it was an amazing feeling.

“It’s incredible and I feel so happy to be a part of this team,” Medico said. “We’ve gone through so much this season and several guys had to step up and fill spots. We’ve got a lot of great players — everyone here was the best in their area and I’m thankful to make it to one of the varsity spots.”

Medico said he also received great training at his job — Kegel Training Center in Lake Wales, Fla. The Center has been revered as one of the premier places in the nation for bowling and Medico said he had the opportunity to improve his technique on the clock, which helped his game immensely.

“My job was basically to bowl every day and I was paid for that,” Medico said. “I was also going to practice, working with the team and it all paid off. It felt good being able to work at the Kegel Training Center and learn from so many great coaches, and I hope to keep working here.”
