Pokémon time coming soon to Kinston

Kinstonians can soon celebrate Pokémon GO’s third anniversary at the Ellis Planetarium at Neuseway Nature Park.

Between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, the mobile video game will merge with science as participants enjoy a scavenger hunt that provides an opportunity to not only fill a virtual poké ball but learn about the animals and exhibits at the park.

“The Pokémon Go activity at the nature park brings people here all the time, and often they don’t get out of their car,” Sarah Bartlett-Pears, the director at Ellis Planetarium, said. “We want to engage them and allow them the opportunity to explore what we have to offer.”

Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Pokémon character. The free event will also feature face painting; all the other experiences to be had at the park include the Nature Center, the Health and Science Museum, and a 52-seat planetarium that has a 24-foot dome where the stars, planets and moon are projected.

Pokémon Go is an augmented reality mobile game developed and published by Niantic for iOS and Android devices. A part of the Pokémon franchise, it was first released in certain countries in July 2016.

Events are happening all over Eastern North Carolina to celebrate the third anniversary. The Pokémon GO’s official Twitter announced, “Trainers, we have some legendary news! Latias, Latios, Kyogre, Groudon will all be available as Research Breakthrough encounters for July and August!”

Officials at Neuseway Nature Park, 401 W Caswell St. in Kinston, is proud to offer this event and encourages everyone to come join in the fun. For more information — including how to volunteer at the event — contact Bartlett-Pears at 252-939-3302.
