Pearson Park now features "Dragons Love Tacos"

Pearson Park offers an interactive storybook walk, providing an opportunity for parents and children to connect while going on a reading adventure.

“Dragons Love Tacos” by Adam Rubin is a New York Times bestselling children’s book, on display along the quarter-mile walking path, lined with 21 display posts.

The StoryWalk™ concept was created by Anne Ferguson, and developed in cooperation with the Kellogg Hubbard Library and the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition. It was introduced in Kinston last April with “I Went Walking,” a children’s story by Sue Williams and illustrated by Julie Vivas.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for parents and grandparents to come out and do something educational with their children.” Stephanie Sullivan, the Program Specialist at Partnership for Children of Lenoir and Greene County said. “It’s a great way to teach children that learning, and reading can be fun.”

The QR Code at the end of the StoryWalk™ connects visitors directly to the Lenoir County StoryWalk™ page, which also includes at home activities related to the book. There are also literacy and development milestones, which can be found at lgpfc.org/programs/lenoir-county-storywalk.

Local restaurant El Azteca has worked with the Partnership for Children of Lenoir and Greene County. The children who complete the StoryWalk™ can visit the restaurant with the catch phrase they learned on their reading adventure for a reward.

“The StoryWalk™ has been very well received in Lenoir County,” Jennelle Lewis, Project Development Coordinator of Partnership for Children of Lenoir and Greene County, said. “It’s an activity that bridges physical activity and early literacy.”
