DEEP RUN — South Lenoir’s penultimate tuneup before the volleyball regular season produced good results.

The Blue Devils held a volleyball jamboree Wednesday, and the varsity played against East Duplin and Richlands. As the regular-season opener gets closer — the Blue Devils face Swansboro on the road on Tuesday — South Lenoir coach Lisa Smith said the scrimmage showed plenty of positive traits.

“We played very well,” Smith said. “We were working as a team, our passes and communication was strong, and we stayed aggressive. We’re not perfect, but I like what I see so far — they’re working hard and continue to battle.”

Alyssa Kopanski said the team showed a lot of what it’s capable of, and it could translate to a great year at South Lenoir.

“The communication was really good (Wednesday),” Kopanski said. “We worked well as a team and there’s a lot of heart — I think there will be some great things coming.”

Mallory Dawson said team chemistry is great and it should equal more victories in 2019.

“A good attitude is key for this season, and I think it’s going to be a fun one,” Dawson said.

The Blue Devils will participate in the Jessica Ramsey Memorial Tournament Saturday at LCC, starting the event against Arendell Parrott Academy at 9 a.m.
