Ikebe Shakedown - Kings Left Behind

This seven-piece horn band from Brooklyn mixes funk, surf music and Afrobeat into the one of the most appetizing aural stews on the market. Modern flourishes abound, but the late 1960s/early 1970s soundtrack work of James Brown and Ennio Morricone are a ghostly presence throughout. This is vibrant, cinematic music played by the tightest, funkiest band in the business. CLICK HERE for samples.

Rodney Crowell - Texas

Rodney Crowell has been making great music for many decades, and like Johnny Cash he’s doing some of his best work in his autumn years. On this collection of tunes centered around the Lone Star State, Crowell is joined by Willie Nelson, Billy Gibbons, Lee Ann Womack and Lyle Lovett. While it may look crowded on paper, the guest seep into the songs like soft butter on warm toast. CLICK HERE for samples.

Chris Robinson Brotherhood - Servants of the Sun

Since torpedoing his former band the Black Crowes, Chris Robinson has forged a path similar to that of the Little Feat and “Meddle”-era Pink Floyd. Guitarist Neal Casal shines throughout, and Robinson is in fine voice. If you’re looking for a modern jam band that knows how to write a great song, you’ll probably enjoy this offering. Patrice Rushen - Remind Me: The Classic Elektra Recordings 1978-1984

Remembered fondly by many for her dance floor hit “Forget Me Nots”, Patrice Rushen scored several hits for Elektra Records during her second wave of success between 1978 and 1984. While Rushen’s early 1970s work boasted a jazzier approach, by the end of the decade her sound had morphed into slick soul and r&b. Other standout songs include “Never Gonna Give You Up”, “Settle For My Love” and “When I Found You”. CLICK HERE for samples.
