Greenville set to host third annual Comic Con Saturday

By Bryan Hanks

GREENVILLE — Ever wanted to hang out with Stormtroopers?

How about getting a picture of Ric Flair’s Starrcade robe along with his NWA world title belt and his personal ring robe he wore in his 1983 world championship?

What about checking out a replica of the famous Ecto-1 vehicle from “Ghostbusters” or the 1967 Chevy Impala hardtop from the TV show “Supernatural”?

You can do all that — and much, much more —  when the Comic Con returns to the Greenville Convention Center for the third consecutive year on Saturday.

Event organizer and director Sherry Deel has brought the Comic Con (short for “convention”) to Greenville all three years. Saturday’s event is from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children 3-12 years of age and free for children under 3.

“It’s a comic book convention, but it’s also about pop culture,” Deel said. “There’s a little bit of something for everyone.”

Visitors to the Greenville Comic Con can expect to see characters dressed in their favorite comic or science fiction movie outfits, including Stormtroopers from the “Star Wars” franchises. Members of the 501st Legion is an international fan-based organization that prides itself on constructing and wearing screen-accurate replicas of the Stormtrooper armor and aother villains from the Stars Wars universe.

Wrestling fans will also be excited to see Ric Flair’s gear.

“We were tickled to get that,” Deel said. “It’s the first time we’ve been able to get that

There will also be panel discussions for fans of all sorts of things, including wildlife and exotic animals; a special class to learn how to draw different superheroes; and how to make your own uniform.

Patrons who wear the costumes or uniforms of their favorite characters will also have an opportunity to enter a costume contest.

Deel said the event is family-friendly; for more details — including a complete schedule of events — search Greenville NC Comic Con on Facebook or visit greenvillenccomiccon.com.
