The Filling Station of Pollocksville will have its second anniversary celebration on Aug. 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., holding a rolling slide show and honoring volunteers who have done selfless work, especially during Hurricane Florence.

Filling Station Board Member Sheri Smith said the organization served as a hub for more than its initial purpose shortly after Florence struck.

“We were the only place in Pollocksville that didn’t flood,” Smith said. “For four months, we were running disaster relief here and as things got a little better in Jones County, we went back to being a food pantry. We’re recognizing volunteers over the past year, along with our church and business sponsors, while also giving tours of the building.”

Miss North Carolina, Alexandra Badgett, will also be in attendance to commemorate the event.

The Filling Station started in 2017 as a food pantry, which is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hot meals are also available to Jones County citizens over the age of 60 with reservations on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and reservations can be made by calling the county’s senior center at 252-448-1001. There are also arts and crafts senior citizens can work on at The Filling Station.
