Greene Central comes back, defeats Kinston in five sets

Kinston broke one long streak Monday and wanted to start another against Greene Central.

Instead, the Rams fought back to win Tuesday’s game25-18, 20-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-8. The Vikings (2-7, 1-3) defeated Washington 25-20, 25-22, 25-17 to pick up their first Eastern Carolina Conference victory since Oct. 13, 2015.

“The girls were more than excited to beat Washington,” Kinston coach Stephanie Ybarra said. “They’ve been working so hard over the course of the season and I don’t think people realize what they’ve been trying to accomplish. For us, it’s been about competing all season and getting better.”

Greene Central (5-5, 1-2) instead recovered to win the game as the Rams surpassed their 2018 win total.

“Kinston is a competitive team,” Greene Central coach Emily Nelson said. “We had to get back to playing at our specific pace and when we were able to do that, we were successful. They’ve really wanted it this year compared to previous years and they didn’t get rattled.”

Greene Central hosts West Craven Thursday while Kinston traveled to Southern Wayne Wednesday.
