If you’ve driven around Trenton lately, you might have seen the “Go Will!” signs posted around the town. Trenton native Will Sutton will be representing the town in NBC’s The Titan Games, which airs at 8 p.m. on Monday, July 13.

Sutton is competing in the second season of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s sports competition reality show that features incredible athletes with inspiring stories.

An agriculture teacher and JV basketball coach at Croatan High School, Sutton originally tried out for the show as a way of pushing his own limits.

“I wanted to see how agile, versatile, and mobile I really was,” Sutton said. “I saw how inspirational the competitors were in Season 1 and Hurricane Florence had just come through my town of Trenton, and I knew this would be huge in building the town’s morale back up. Plus, The Rock is an awesome person, and I thought it would be really cool to be on his TV show.

Johnson described Sutton as “country strong.”

“Hard work and determination are the cornerstones of what it means to be a Titan,” Johnson said. “Will brings these values to the arena and to the classroom of his students. He is country strong and has everything it takes to be an educator, a leader, and a Titan.”

During the filming of the show, Sutton’s parents, aunt and fiancée were all able to come out and support him. Back home in Trenton, the community is also showing their support.

“We are so excited,” said Trenton Mayor Darlene Spivey. “It’s beyond imaginable! We get to show how strong one can be with determination and hard work. Will and his family are very athletic and are always striving to better themselves. What a way to show how dedication pays off. We are beyond proud of Will as his hometown!”

Sutton appreciates the opportunity to represent his eastern North Carolina hometown.

“Sometimes our little towns get overlooked, but not this time,” he said. “I love my town of Trenton, and I loved growing up in a small town. Small towns have strong people, mentally and physically, and I hope that I show that Trenton has some of the strongest!”

*A previous version of this story reported Sutton was in the finale of The Titan Games. Finalists have not yet been announced.
