Candidates for N.C. General Assembly House seats report Q2 campaign finances

Candidates for House seats in the North Carolina General Assembly representing Greene, Lenoir and Jones counties reported their campaign finances for the second quarter of 2020. The general election will take place on Nov. 3, 2020. Neuse News will provide live election results coverage that evening.

Greene County

In Greene County, incumbent Rep. John Bell is running against challenger Carl Martin for the District 10 seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Rep. Bell, a native of Mount Olive, N.C. and a graduate of North Duplin High School, was first elected to the House in 2012. In 2016, he was elected by his colleagues to serve as the House Majority Whip. He was then elected House Majority Leader in 2016 and re-elected for the 2017-2018 and 2019-2020 sessions.

Martin was born and raised in the Bedford Stuyvesant community of Brooklyn, N.Y., and is currently serving as Chair of the Wayne County Democratic Party.

In the second quarter of 2020, Rep. Bell raised more money than his opponent. Rep. Bell raised $20,073 in contributions from individuals and $40,300 from other political committees like PACs. Martin raised a total of $503.

Rep. Bell had $145,621 Cash on Hand at End of Reporting Period and Martin had $269.

Lenoir County

In Lenoir County, incumbent Representative Chris Humphrey is running against Virginia Cox-Daugherty for N.C. House District 12. Cox-Daugherty, a native North Carolinian born in Craven County, raised $86,284 from individual contributors compared to Rep. Humphrey’s $15,410. Cox-Daugherty received contributions from political party committees and PACs totaling $21,747 during the quarter. Rep. Humphrey reported $6,500 in contributions from PACs.

Rep. Humphrey had $47,741 Cash on Hand at End of Reporting Period and Cox-Daugherty had $98,982.

Rep. Humphrey serves as the House Majority Freshman Caucus Whip and currently serves on several committees including Health, Insurance, Agriculture, Appropriations, Appropriations – Agriculture and Natural and Economic Resources, Energy and Public Utilities, Finance, House Select Committee on Disaster Relief, Judiciary and was recently appointed to the Revenue Laws Interim Committee.

Jones County

In Jones County, incumbent Representative Patricia McElraft is campaigning for N.C. House District 13 and raised a total of $50 during the second quarter of 2020. Her opponent, Buck Bayliff, raised $5,025 from individual contributions and $1,140 from political party committees. Contributions from other political party committees for Bayliff totaled $1,140 to Rep. McElraft's $0.

Rep. McElraft had $8,405 Cash on Hand at End of Reporting Period and Bayliff had $6,271.

Rep. McElraft is currently one of the Deputy Majority Whips. Bayliff is a North Carolina native. He was raised in Graham, attended Graham Elementary School, Graham High School, Elon College, and Wake Forest University.
