Parrott Academy students in Honors Biology and AP Environmental Science virtually joined the WATERS Conference hosted by U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy in Greenville on Wednesday.  The first-ever Water Adaptations to Ensure Regional Success summit featured seven and a half hours of presentations and discussions by scientists, water policy experts, and political leaders. Representatives David Rouzer and G.K. Butterfield, Sen. Thom Tillis, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, and N.C. Rep. Tim Moore all were scheduled to participate. 

“Virtual participation in this conference is a great way to show our students that science issues touch every facet of our lives,” explained Parrott biology teacher Henry Piner.  

Days before the conference, Piner facilitated student-led research on water issues, particularly in local communities. “Water plays a key role in economic development and human survival, so finding solutions to our water challenges is crucial,” student Miller Wiggins noted.  After viewing the conference remotely in their classroom, students will present their own research and possible solutions to flooding and marine coastal challenges.
