With Halloween just around the corner, the Kinston Police Department would like to remind  everyone of a few safety tips:

∙ Cross the street at the corners or marked crosswalks

∙ Always look both ways before crossing the road

∙ Always walk on the sidewalk if you can

∙ Watch out for cars that may be turning or backing up

∙ Never dart out into the street or cross the street between cars

∙ Younger trick or treaters need to have an adult with them

∙ Always trick or treat with a buddy or even better a group of friends

∙ Visit only the homes of people you know and trust

∙ Never enter anyone’s home and remain at the doorsteps

∙ When thinking about your costume, be sure your child can walk easily in his or her costume  without tripping. Try adding reflective tape and choose light colors to help them be seen. ∙ Carry glow sticks or a flashlight with you so you can see and be seen

∙ Make sure your child can see clearly through any head coverings

∙ When driving around, slow down and be alert in residential neighborhoods for kids out trick or  treating.

∙ Eliminate distractions in your vehicle so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings ∙ Anticipate more pedestrian traffic and drive slowly.

Statistically, Halloween can be one of the most dangerous days of the year for children and the  Kinston Police Department wants to help insure all our residents have a safe and happy  Halloween.
