Letter to the Editor: Elijah Woods for Felicia Solomon for Mayor

As we approach Tuesday, November 2nd, my thoughts continue to grow about the results of the City Council and especially the Mayoral elections. The office of mayor is considered the chief political office in city government. The importance of this role cannot be taken lightly. This letter is not a personal indictment against Mayor Hardy, the man, but an expressed uneasiness about his leadership skills and concern about his judgement which impacts us all as citizens of Kinston.

I have attended all the mayoral candidate forums held this election season (attended by all the candidates except mayoral candidate Zach Holcomb). It is important for us to be informed voters. After attending the last forum held on October 14th, I felt compelled to share a few things that have burdened my mind due to decisions made by Mayor Hardy this year alone (2021). Please consider the following:

  1.  Inspite of the disdain expressed by the community of his request for an $1,800 laundry allowance in addition to a $300 salary/stipend increase (while raising property taxes) he justified this with the following response on October 14th:

“When you start talking about dry cleaning in that particular moment in time, I’ve been on the ground, and I’ve been working very, very hard for our city…”

  2. During his interview with Neuse News (@ the 7 min. mark), he stated he felt that he along with the Council should be paid what those in proximity to Kinston (Lenoir County and other cities) make. That is absolutely absurd. As a member of the Lenoir County Board of Education (we receive $300 per month for our service to our community), I know that proximity has nothing to do with your level of responsibility, ability to pay, burden on taxpayers, etc.

Public service has or never will be about the financial gain of a public servant.

As a concerned citizen and taxpayer, I have chosen to endorse Felicia Solomon for Mayor. Please give careful consideration of your vote. This election is not about the splitting of votes or entitlement of a Mayor serving 2 years, but about choosing the best leader. We need a mayor who understands budgets, is ready to actively work collaboratively not only with council and staff, but with all residents willing to roll up sleeves, pull together, and fix the many problems facing the city of Kinston. Please join me in voting for a courageous candidate that has proven she is committed and loyal to the citizens of Kinston. Vote for Felicia Solomon for mayor.

Elijah Woods
Kinston Resident
