Uvonda Willis named Greene County School's Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year
Uvonda Willis, Assistant Principal of Greene Central High School was named this year’s Greene County School’s Secondary Assistant Principal of the year which is sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Principals and Assistant Principals. Each year Greene County Schools Principals choose one AP to represent them for both the Elementary level and secondary level. Mrs. Willis was recognized with this honor during the board meeting on Monday, October 25.
Mrs. Willis and her husband Delmus have 3 students all of which attend Greene County Schools. She has been a part of the GCHS family since 2014 but taught and was an administrator prior to that.
Mrs. Willis attended the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill receiving her BA in English.
She also earned her Masters of Education in English at UNC- Greensboro, followed by an Ed.S from Liberty University focused on Supervision and Administration. She currently is a candidate for a Doctorate program at Liberty University.
Mrs. Willis said that she “became an assistant principal because I wanted to inspire change with students and the community (that) I serve on a larger scale.” She said she began to see that change happening in her classroom and that she wanted to see it on a larger scale. She said she loves her current position and gets to work each day impacting the lives of GCHS students. She said, “the number of students she gets to reach has no limit and for that I am grateful.”
Mr. Willis said her biggest goal was simply that of “being a servant leader.” She believes that “serving others requires you to constantly be intentional in your words, actions and deeds.” She also stressed the importance of being reflective at all times.
As Covid 19 has affected education in an unprecedented way, Mrs. Willis said that her leadership is more focused and mindful in light of the pandemic. She believes that the pandemic has caused her to be mindful of the way she sets expectations and the conversations that she has.
She closed by saying that “I am thankful for this opportunity.” Mrs. Willis will compete through an interview and application process to hold the title National Secondary School Principals Outstanding Assistant Principal of the year.
