Obituary: Glenda Elmore
Glenda Elmore July 29, 1943-December 5, 2021
Kinston-Glenda Barwick Elmore was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, December 5, 2021. She was born in Lenoir County to the late Raymond G. Barwick and Louella Holland Barwick on July 29, 1943. In addition to her parents, Glenda was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Elmore and daughter, Rhylee Elmore Fielding. Family and faith were at the center of Glenda’s life. She and her husband, Bill, reared their three girls to be proper southern young ladies with understanding of etiquette and practice of good manners. Glenda believed that a clean and moral inside should be reflected with a well-presented outside. Lipstick and earrings were always put to use and she taught her girls to use the same. When she was seen in public, it was never without being primped and proper.
Glenda’s love for her girls was evident in everything she did. She wanted only the best for them and their own families. She was ever-present as “Nannay” to her grandchildren. She tirelessly helped her daughters to raise their own children and supported them in all their endeavors. Her annual “Summer Camp Nannay” was a time her grandchildren looked forward to each year as they were spoiled and entertained by their “Nannay and Guy”. Her love even overflowed to her fur-grandchildren. Some of Glenda’s favorite times were spent at family gatherings. Whether enjoying everyone around the table for a meal, spending time at the beach home with a packed house, or hosting a gathering of friends or her Holland cousins, Glenda’s priority in life was to have all of her family together.
She always looked forward to gatherings with her special Ya-Ya friends, as well as her retired friends from Moss Hill School, where she worked for many years as a teacher assistant. The only thing that came before Glenda’s family was her faith. A lifelong member of Gordon Street Christian Church, Glenda and her husband, Bill, were married in the church and faithfully attended as long as their health allowed. If the doors of the church were open, Glenda, Bill, and the girls were going to be in attendance. From youth gatherings to musicals and handbells, Glenda encouraged her girls’ involvement in church activities. She was most fond of her Women’s Fellowship Circle and the Forever Young outings and was always quick to lend a hand in the events of the church. Glenda assumed the responsibility of polishing the church’s silver and firmly believed that no one could do it better.
While our hearts are broken at her departure, we know her reunion with Bill and Rhylee was a glorious one. Funeral services will be held at Gordon Street Christian Church at 6 o’clock in the evening on Thursday, December 9, 2021. Family will receive friends for a time of visitation in the sanctuary in the hour before the service. The family respectfully requests that guests wear masks and practice distancing. Committal services will take place at Westview Cemetery on Friday, December 10, 2021, at 11 o’clock in the morning.
Glenda is survived by two daughters, Robin Beaman and husband, Rusty, and Rebecca Journigan and husband, Jim; a son-in-law, Richard Fielding; grandchildren, Macy and Pierce Beaman, Carson and Ellie Fielding, and Fisher and Sally Journigan; as well as her cherished Holland cousins.
