Obituary - Carol S. Sykes

PINK HILL - The Honorable Carol S. Sykes passed away on Friday, August 26, 2021 at N.C. Heart and Vascular Hospital in Raleigh.

Carol was born in Lenoir County on December 12, 1941 to the late Percy and Lilly Stroud. She resided in Pink Hill her entire life where she served the town tirelessly for nearly 50 years as town clerk and mayor. Carol was Pink Hill’s biggest advocate and loudest cheerleader. People may have disagreed with some of her decisions, but no one can argue that she did what she thought was best for the citizens of Pink Hill. Carol had a servant’s heart as evidenced by her involvement in numerous civic groups and volunteer activities including: Boys and Girls Club, United Way, Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce, LCC Foundation, American Red Cross, LMH Volunteers and Rotary to name a few. Carol was a lifetime member of Pink Hill Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, William Sykes and her son-in-law, The Honorable R. Leslie Turner. She is survived by her daughters, Leigh Turner and Holly LaRoque (husband, Walter) and grandchildren, Abby and John Harvey Turner. Carol also leaves behind her beach family with whom she spent many weekends at her beloved Emerald Isle.

A celebratory Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31 at the home of Leigh Turner (aka Turner Beach) at 105 Bill Sutton Road in Pink Hill.
