Randy Doss, a veteran college admissions officer and speaker at regional and national workshops, addressed 60 freshmen and parents at Parrott Academy on Monday, September 20th.  With opening remarks on “what really happens in college admissions,” Doss stressed the importance of starting early in high school to build a solid foundation.  He advised students to challenge themselves with rigorous courses and pay attention to what interests and motivates them.  “College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won,” he stated.

Sixty freshmen students and parents gathered in Parrott Academy’s Student Activity Center to hear an inside view of what really happens in college admissions.

Doss’s advice echoes recent articles from U.S. News, NPR, and other sources discussing how college admissions are adapting to COVID affected students. As Parrott college advisor Mitzi Moye stated, “While colleges are reacting to the pandemic with less emphasis on testing, this puts more emphasis on each student’s daily effort.  It’s great for freshmen to hear that, since they’re just starting to build their high school record. ”

Each year, Moye coordinates a series of college advising speakers and events at Parrott. “Last year this fall freshman event was virtual, so I’m glad to have Mr. Doss speak in person, with social distancing and masking. “

Doss spent 28 years as chief enrollment and admissions officer at two North Carolina colleges and is past president of a North and South Carolina organization (CACRAO) that supervises recruiting of all colleges and universities in those two states.
