Scan a QR code on the poster in the hallway, fill out an interest survey, and you can join Patriots for the Planet—if you’re a Parrott Academy high school student.  

This environmental organization is the school’s newest club.  The initial meeting was Friday, January 7th, and student leaders are already developing three projects for this semester.  Biology teacher Henry Piner, the PforP adviser, says he’s happy to let the students themselves lead the organization.  Students Carolina Jones, Max Andrews, and Sofia Brantley are spearheading the group for now, seeking new members and generating enthusiasm for promoting recycling on campus.  

In APA’s middle school, a host of new student clubs started early in the fall.  Latin teacher Whitney Grady suggested the idea to fellow faculty members. “We have homeroom every day, and we wanted students to have opportunities for fun, for learning, and for developing their leadership,” she said.  Students have generated ideas for clubs, including “Board Games,”  “The Happy Rocks Rock Painters,” “Life Skills,” and “Outdoor Club,” among others.  The groups meet weekly on Wednesdays, providing a break from academic studies.  

“Student clubs have always been important for schools,” commented Head of School David Moody. “As students have faced so many changes and stresses during the pandemic, it’s even more vital that they get social time during the school day, and we’re delighted with these new, active clubs.”
