Help wanted: Lenoir County Planning and Inspections - Permit Technician

Salary Range: $29,785 - $45,322

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs responsible administrative work in enforcing housing and zoning ordinances. Work includes issuing development permits and interpretation of ordinances related to county development.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class is involved in issuing development and watershed permits; interpreting routine ordinances related to development and zoning; researching and preparing agenda for public meetings, researching routine zoning and ordinance problems and communicates with the public. Frequent personal contact is involved with county, state and federal officials concerning proposals for establishing or reviewing ordinances and planning activities. The employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and extremely hot and cold temperatures. Work can be also subject to noise and dust. Work requires some independent judgment and initiative in planning local and regional future efforts. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through conferences, reports, and feedback from various boards.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:

• Issues development permits, interprets ordinances,

prepares agenda for public meetings and

assists the public with information regarding

community development.

• Presents oral and written reports, including special

maps, charts and graphics, to assist officials in

determination.

• Researched and interprets zoning, subdivision

regulations, land use and overall Code of

Ordinances to developers, citizens, various boards,

and County management on related matters.

• Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of principles of local and regional

planning as applied to natural resources, population,

cultural features, and economic and social matters.

• Knowledge of county, state, and federal laws and

regional planning.

• Skill in interpretation of state building codes.

• Ability to design and prepare analytical and

interpretative reports.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working

relationships with contractors and the public.

• Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written

forms.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school graduation and considerable experience in economic development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
