Taking the Library to the Cleaners

Neuse Regional Libraries have made serving the literacy needs of our local residents a top priority, which has led to services such as our Literacy Without Barriers and Homework Help programs. We are  excited to announce the launch of our newest grant-funded early literacy program, Suds and Stories. Each week our Youth Services Librarians will present weekly storytime programs at Vick’s Cleaners. After each program, attendees will receive a family literacy kit which includes a curated set of picture books, a research-based early-literacy tip sheet in English and Spanish, and a tote bag.

So, what exactly is early literacy? Early literacy seems like a fairly straightforward term – teaching babies and toddlers how to read – but, it is actually so much more. Early literacy is giving young children the tools they need to develop strong language skills and self-expression. Children’s literacy development begins at birth and is enhanced through exposure to books, reading aloud, singing, and playing. In turn, all of these skills combine to lay a foundation for children to become successful readers.

Neuse Regional Libraries recognizes that it is not always possible for families to attend library programs, so we have made it a priority to bring programs to families. The development of Suds and Stories is in an effort to bring fun and educational experiences to families in a format that is most convenient for them. Join us for Suds and Stories on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 A.M. Vick’s Cleaners is located at 663 Sussex Street in Kinston.

This program has been made possible by a grant administered by the State Library of North Carolina. For more information on Youth Services Programming at all Neuse Regional Library locations in Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties, please call 252-527-7066, Ext. 133.
