The Greene County Board of Commissioners voted to select Matt Sasser as the interim sheriff until the upcoming election in November. Sasser replaces Sheriff Lemmie Smith.

“I do appreciate all the applicants that applied,” said Susan Blizzard, Greene County Commissioner. “This is an appointment until November. November will be the citizen’s choice. So, that is a temporary position that will be filled permanently in November by the citizens of Greene County"

In February, when Smith announced his intent to retire, he recommended Sasser to fill the interim post. The board presented Lemmie Smith with a token of their appreciation for his years of service.

Sasser will face fellow candidate Jason Tyndall for the upcoming election in the 2022 Statewide Primary that will be on Tuesday May 17, 2022. The winner of the primary race will face James Harper in November.
