Lions Industries for the Blind, Inc. celebrates 50 years of service
Despite the delays faced last year, Lions Industries for the Blind, Inc. (LIB) celebrated 50 years of service to the community through providing jobs for blind, visually impaired, deaf, and other disabled individuals. Under a large white tent, community leaders, partners, and LIB employees shared the stories of how LIB impacted their lives.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to be here today,” said June Cummings, County Commissioner. “I had already signed up to come because I was thrilled to be able to celebrate this opportunity of 50 years of service to the community. You guys are the best.”
National Industries for the Blind, the nation’s largest employment resource for people who are blind, celebrated the event with Lions Industries.
“This is a special time for this organization,” said Kevin Lynch, President and CEO of National Industries of the Blind (NIB). “Fifty years? That is remarkable.”
The LIB employees outshined seasoned public speakers as they expressed their joy and gratitude for the opportunities that LIB has provided. Carmel Rogers began with Lions Industry about 14 years ago. Today she operates the velcro machine in the military embroidery department.
“Within LIB I have met and continue to meet great individuals with whom I find entertainment along with inspiration, amongst other things,” said Rogers. “These folks, figuratively speaking, have opened my eyes to the fact that despite our impairment being sight or hearing, we’re able to do just as much as everyone else. Just with a different, but cooler, approach.”
NC Senator Jim Perry was recognized as legislator of the year for his dedication to further the efforts of organizations like LIB and NIB.
