Occupational Health Nurse

Description Performs intermediate professional work in the development and implementation of employee health and wellness programs, assessing and evaluating on-the-job injuries, giving new employee physicals, hearing tests, drug-free workplace testing, and related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Human Resources.
Essential Functions Developing policies and procedures for employee health and wellness programs; assessing, evaluating and providing treatment for on-the-job injuries; conducting physical assessments and collecting specimens for drug and alcohol screening; preparing and maintaining files and records. The following functions are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Develops policies and procedures for employee health and wellness programs; works with City departments to develop policies affected under employee health and wellness programs. Assesses and evaluates on-the-job injuries; provides treatment according to protocols to injuries received on and off the job. Provides physical assessments and testing for all new hires, periodic and annual testing for employee groups with specific hazards. Performs physical testing such as hearing, vision, pulmonary function, TB skin testing and blood work post exposure and routinely. Provides for the collection and testing of specimens for drug and alcohol testing for new hires and employees under reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, transfers and promotions. Coordinates the wellness program; performing indicated testing and development of the program. Provides required immunizations for pre- and post-exposure to hepatitis and rabies, flu and tetanus; performs follow-up with employees regarding blood sugar and cholesterol program compliance. Conducts training on CDL regulations, drug free workplace, FMLA, workers' compensation, back injury prevention, blood borne pathogen exposure, CPR, etc.; Prepares and maintains medical records in accordance with appropriate regulations. Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications Thorough knowledge of professional nursing techniques and practices; general knowledge of the principles of occupational health services; general knowledge of the methods of organizing, coordinating and carrying out health and wellness programs; some knowledge of workers' compensation laws; ability to prepare operational policies, procedures and programs; ability to diagnose and administer treatment of a variety of common occupational illnesses and injuries; ability to determine employee health educational needs and develop appropriate materials; ability to prepare and maintain records and reports; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; skill in administering examinations, tests and treatment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, physicians, health care providers, insurance agency representatives and associates. Education and Experience Bachelor's degree with coursework in nursing, or related field and considerable experience in nursing or occupational health, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements Possession of certification as an Occupational Health Nurse valid in the State of North Carolina preferred. Special consideration given for those who have completed and hold certifications in Spirometry, Urine Drug Collection, and CPR trainer. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of State.
