Kinston, N.C. –  Senator Jim Perry, Majority Whip of the North Carolina Senate, has been appointed to serve on the Subcommittee on Hurricane Response and Recovery by Senate President Pro Tempore, Phil Berger.

Senator Berger announced the establishment of Subcommittee on Hurricane Response and Recovery under the umbrella of the Joint Legislative Commission on Governmental Operations:  The Subcommittee was formed pursuant to G.S 120-75.(b), and Rule 31 of the Permanent Rules of the Senate.

Senator Perry has previously served as Chairman of the Senate’s Select Committee on Storm Related River Debris and Damage in North Carolina.  While serving in that capacity, he performed a great deal of research into flood mitigation strategies and plans used in Louisiana and Iowa.  He has expressed particular interest in using nature based solutions which focus on the use of our natural topography, riparian buffers and fluid mechanics.

Perry’s leadership efforts and research into the areas of nature based solutions have previously been recognized by the National Flood Coalition, the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, the North Carolina Coastal Federation and the Eastern North Carolina Recovery and Resilience Alliance.

“I appreciate Senator Berger’s confidence in my ability to serve on this committee.  I am a native of ENC and Hurricane Response and Recovery is a topic that is important to the people I serve.    I am proud we have a plan in motion and that we have appropriated funding to help with flood mitigation, but our hurricane response and recovery is unacceptable.  We must work with NCORR to drive change and improvement for the people whose lives are impacted by hurricanes.”   - Senator Jim Perry

Senator Jim Perry serves as Majority Whip of the North Carolina Senate.  Additionally, he is Chairman of Health Care and Chairman of Appropriations on Health and Human Services.  He serves on the Appropriations, Finance, and Rules committees.
