Help wanted: Lenoir County Landfill/Solid waste - Heavy Equipment Operator

Description of work: The position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in support of the county’s solid waste management operations.

General Description of duties: This is skilled work in the operation of solid waste collection equipment. Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of assigned equipment. Under general supervision of either the Director or Landfill Manager, the position is to operate medium and heavy motorized equipment. Position is responsible for operating backhoes, yard dogs, bulldozers, compactors, excavators, and front-end loaders to spread, pack, push and cover refuse and debris. Employee is also responsible for performing routine maintenance on heavy equipment. Manual work and heavy lifting may also be performed as necessary. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities: Thorough knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment and maintenance principles. Knowledge of the principles and practices of landfill operation. Skill in the operation of a variety of heavy equipment. Skill in providing customer service.

• Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including

bulldozer, front-end loader, excavator, backhoe,

compactor, and yard dog, etc.

• Completes inspections and performs basic

equipment maintenance; reports repair needs to

manager.

• Operates equipment in the maintenance and

operation of landfill.

• Transfers trailers to and from transfer station.

Physical requirements: Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing, repetitive motions. Must be able to perform exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. The employee is subject to working in outside environments, extreme temperatures and weather. Employee is exposed to various hazards such as noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, atmospheric conditions, and oils. Duties may expose worker to human body fluids and thus the work is subject to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens.

Minimum training and experience requirements: Graduation from High School. Experience in heavy equipment operation. A valid North Carolina driver’s license is required. This position is subject to pre-employment, random, post-accident and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Transportation Administration guidelines and local Lenoir County policy.
