Obituary: William “George” Mathis
William “George” Mathis passed away on Jan 10, 2023 at his home in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born May 20, 1943 to Jackson Crowell Mathis and Helen Hartis Mathis. He grew up in Kinston and graduated from Grainger High School and attended East Carolina University.
George was a construction project manager and his career spanned over 50 years. His expertise was in large scale projects such as schools, hospitals, libraries, coliseums, and museums, including the North Carolina Museum of Natural History. In George’s professional career, he was renowned and respected for his impeccable skills with critical details of structural integrity and project safety.
George was a devout Christian who adored his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church, served as a Deacon and on many committees. He enjoyed mission trips with NC Baptist Men especially after Hurricane Katrina. George continued to grow in his faith in Jesus during his years in Bible Study Fellowship. He also enjoyed volunteering in the ROC at his church.
George and golf were synonymous. You would know at the end of the day whether he had a good game or not! He enjoyed playing at Falling Creek, Kinston Country Club and River Ridge in Raleigh.
George is survived by his wife Alice, and his children William Mathis Jr. and wife Blair, Teri Mathis Stock and husband Adam, his children’s mother Judy Heath, sister Jackie Mathis Stewart and husband Doug, brother Joe Mathis and wife Dorthy and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and his beloved Aunt Mary. He was “Papa” to his grandchildren Brennan King (Brian), Zane Mathis (Caitlyn), Devin Cooney (Keri), Megan Boone (Cameron) and his great grandchildren Arlo and Anderson Atwell, Mason Mathis and Kamryn Boone. George delighted in spending time with his children and his grands and Alice’s daughter and family, Allison, Brad, William and Caroline.
George’s life is celebrated for the many ways his friendship, service, and devotion have touched so many lives. If you knew George, you knew a kind, gentle and faithful friend. He had a charitable and giving spirit, especially to his church family and community that were so close to his heart.
A memorial service to celebrate George’s life will be held on Tuesday, Jan 17, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church of Raleigh. There will be a visitation in the Fellowship Hall following the service.
