Obituary: Gloria Phillips

Gloria Phillips

May 30, 1938- December 28, 2022

Kinston- Gloria Jean Pierce Beaman Phillips peacefully and quietly departed this life on December 28, 2022. She was born in New Hanover County to the late George Candace Pierce and Lena Tyndall Pierce on May 30, 1938. In addition to her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her husband and the father of her children, William Carl Beaman; her second husband and companion, James Allen Phillips; and siblings, Joyce Pierce Abernathy, George Pierce, Jr., and Donald Pierce.

With her early years spent in Wilmington, Gloria found it challenging to adjust to life on the family farm after moving to Pink Hill. She later learned to love the simple life and shared countless stories about her experiences there.

Gloria flourished in school and social settings, especially when it came to sports. From basketball to softball or golf, Gloria was a natural athlete. She had collected an array of medals and awards that continued to grow even into her golden years. Gloria was a Ladies Club champion (golf) and a long-time participant in North Carolina’s Senior Games (Team Name: Ole Rascals) up until the age of 82. The ‘Ole Rascals’ were made up of a talented bunch of outstanding women whom Gloria proudly considered best friends.

While attending high school, Gloria met the love of her life, Carl. The two met at the Jones County Fair, and once graduated, they married in September. Together, they raised their four boys and built a life together. Gloria was a protective mother and always put her children first. She shared her love of sports and dancing with them and was their number one fan in the stands or for any performances. Nothing was more important than her family.

Independent, organized, and thrifty, Gloria always seemed to have it all together. From her office to her home, she enjoyed tidiness and kept a one-of-a-kind filing system. Later in life, Gloria found that her granddaughters, especially, took up her thriftiness and were always thrilled when they “found a deal”. “Grandmother”, as she was lovingly referred, loved her grandchildren and the precious times they shared together.

A service of love and remembrance will be held at Rouse Funeral Home on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation in the hour before the service.

Gloria was survived by her sons, Carl Beaman (Dawn), Rusty Beaman (Robin), Paul Beaman (Lisa), and Robb Beaman; grandchildren, Cameron and Madison Beaman Parrott, and their mother, Candy Beaman, Macy Beaman, Pierce Beaman, Chandler Beaman Greenburg, and Lucy Beaman Christiansen; great-grandchildren, Parker Greenburg, Brooks Christiansen, and Crew Greenburg; and a sister, Annette Moore.
