Snow Hill -  On Monday, September 25th, the staff of West Greene Elementary hosted their first Title One event of the 2023-2024 school year, Family Literacy Night, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.  

The school’s Family Literacy Night event offered several sessions of informational Title 1 information and teacher-led mini-sessions for families to promote understanding of diagnostic reports, including iReady, DIBELS, and HMH Into Math.  A mini-session demonstration of a phonics lesson was also offered.  

In addition to the sessions, the event featured additional stations in which vocabulary and comprehension strategies and literacy resources were shared.  Teachers demonstrated a Read-Aloud of both fiction and non-fiction text, information on the school’s Social and Emotional Curriculum, Zones of Regulation, bookmark design, and hands-on experiences with STEM bin stations were led with the partnership of the students from Greene Early College High School. 

The Neuse Regional Library also shared their programs designed to promote literacy for elementary and youth-aged student. Beyond the informational components, student projects for Hispanic Heritage Month were on display.  Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15th through October 15th and serves to honor the cultures of American citizens whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, Central or South America, and the Caribbean. 

The projects featured were a culmination of the research done by our students on Influential Hispanic Leaders.  Ranging from collaborative art projects featuring mediums used by famous Hispanic artists, information and opportunities to sample foods from Mexico, Colombia, and Nicaragua, and interviews in which traditions were shared, visitors were invited to walk through and enjoy the experience.
