March is Women's History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the vital role of women in American history. In this spirit, we would like to feature Talisa Joyner, a small business owner and influential figure in the community. Talisa is the founder of Adelphe Christian Sorority, Inc., a non-profit organization that aims to inspire women and make a positive impact.

“The journey started many years ago with a small group of friends with an idea of sisterhood and community service,” said Joyner. “We started an online women’s group on Facebook called ‘Becoming’ which to this day has over 300 members.”

Becoming has now evolved into Adelphe Christian Sorority Inc. The organization has over 50 members, spanning from Seattle to New Jersey, and is a 501c3 non-profit.

As a local business owner of Shear Genius Barber and Styling for over 20 years, Joyner has seen firsthand some of the challenges that the area faces.

“Instead of being passive and having conversations about everything that was going on I decided to do what I could to bring about change,” said Joyner.

One of the challenges Joyner has faced is trying to muster consistent support. It is difficult to do anything on your own, so having other like-minded individuals on your side is crucial. Despite this, she has collaborated with others in the community to bring about positive change. For example, Adelphe Christian Sorority, Inc. has collaborated with Greene County Schools to provide free Wi-Fi hotspots to underprivileged students. They have also donated food, clothing, and games to Kinston's homeless shelter.

“The most pressing issue facing our community, in my opinion, is the financial disparity,” said Joyner. “All too often the ones who need our help the most are those who are experiencing financial hardship.”

Joyner believes that we have to reach our kids at the grade school level to prevent future similarities. She is committed to making a difference and has plans to achieve this by growing Adelphe Christian Sorority Inc. and coming alongside other like-minded organizations.

Balancing community involvement with other personal and professional responsibilities can be challenging, but Joyner has found that having supportive friends and family lightens the load. Her main motivation is to remember the "Why?".

“Why am I doing it?” Joyner asks herself. “Why is it important? Why should I even care? The simple answer is because it is the right thing to do.”

Talisa Joyner is a small business owner making a big impact in the community. Her dedication to making a difference is an inspiration to us all, and we are fortunate to have her as an influential woman in our community. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Talisa and Adelphe Christian Sorority Inc. as they continue to make a positive impact on the community.
