Pink Hill Public Library Serves as Community Center for All
Lori Bradford, Branch Manager, Pink Hill Public Library
Libraries are more than just places to check out books, especially in small towns like Pink Hill. The Etta Jones Turner Public Library (Pink Hill Public Library) has served as a community center since 1984. You might be surprised to learn that libraries offer a variety of services and free engaging programs to enrich lives of all ages. In addition, there is no need for a library card for these programs.
On one particular weekday afternoon, for example, the parking lot of the Etta Jones Turner Public Library is full of cars and the inside gets be a little loud. It’s time for STEMology! On Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m., children with curious minds explore monthly topics that help them gain skills in science, technology, engineering, and math. Last month, we helped children create their own lung, heart, blood and digestive models. This month, we’re travelling back in time for Medieval Mayhem! We will experiment while learning about castles, water wheels, and drawbridges.
Game night at the library is perfect for any teenager. Every month we host Players League, a teen only game night that has classic and new board games to play, along with XBOX favorites like Fortnite and Forza. Once a month, for our Make-It-Monday, we get creative! In the past, teens have made apple oatmeal balls, painted candy gumball jars, and this month they are creating flower seed bombs. Teen programs are available for ages twelve to eighteen.
Adults can also attend exciting events each month at the Pink Hill Public Library. Each month the library offers a variety of adult programs that introduce new skills, hobbies or the history behind cultures. Learning how to frost cupcakes, to dance salsa, or to use essential oils are programs the library has offered in the past. On March 22 at 5:00 p.m., local artist, Mindy Allen, will demonstrate how to turn inexpensive items into a beautiful floral wreath. To celebrate National Poetry Month in April, guest speaker John Hoppenthaler will highlight the work of Native-American poets, Joy Harjo and Natalie Diaz. This event will be held on April 19 at 5:00 p.m. He also will guide participants through the writing of their own poems.
As a small but growing community, we know that current and new Pink Hill residents alike are looking for new activities in the community. We hope that you will remember the Etta Jones Turner Public Library and all of the wonderful program offerings we regularly offer at our Library.
